History
The story of Africa Industrialization Day began with a powerful idea — Africa needed to move beyond exporting raw materials and start creating value through industry.
In the 1980s, African leaders recognised that true economic independence required strong industries, not just agriculture and trade. They wanted a united effort to promote factories, technology, and innovation across the continent.
During the 25th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) in July 1989, leaders decided to establish a special day to highlight the importance of industrialisation.
A few months later, in December 1989, the United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 44/237, officially declaring November 20 as Africa Industrialization Day.
The first celebration took place in 1990, marking the start of an annual tradition to raise awareness and inspire progress.
Since then, every year on November 20, African nations and global partners have come together to discuss new ways to grow sustainable industries. Each year focuses on a unique theme, such as innovation, green growth, or women’s empowerment in industry.
