    History

Originally launched in the United States as National Running Day, this event was designed to get people moving and highlight the benefits of running. It was organized by leading running organizations, including New York Road Runners, to unite communities and individuals around the joy of running.

In 2016, the day expanded beyond U.S. borders to become Global Running Day, inviting runners from all over the world to participate. The inaugural global celebration saw over 2.5 million people from 177 countries pledging to run more than 9.2 million miles—yes, you read that right!

One of the most heartwarming parts of Global Running Day is the Million Kid Run, a youth-focused initiative encouraging kids to run and have fun. In 2016 alone, 672,030 children participated, proving that running is for every age.

When COVID-19 hit, large events took a backseat. But runners are a resilient bunch! Global Running Day continued in virtual form, with online pledges and solo runs allowing people to keep the tradition alive, safely and creatively.

Every first Wednesday of June since, millions have laced up their sneakers to join the movement. From charity runs to solo jogs in the park, the day has become a cherished event on the fitness calendar.
