Global Selfie Earth Day – April 22

In 2014, NASA came up with a brilliant idea to celebrate Earth Day in a way that had never been done before. Instead of simply talking about environmental awareness, they decided to make it visual, interactive, and global.

Their mission? To create a "Global Selfie" mosaic—a giant image of Earth composed entirely of selfies from people around the world. The idea was to engage everyday people in a fun, meaningful way, while reminding us that we all share this planet together.

To make it happen, NASA invited people from every corner of the globe to submit selfies taken outdoors, showing their environment, climate, and scenery. Each participant was encouraged to hold a sign saying where they were on Earth. The response was overwhelming!

NASA received more than 36,000 selfies from 113 countries, and those images were carefully pieced together to form one stunning, interactive photo of our planet. The campaign was a hit, not only because it was fun and creative, but because it brought awareness to environmental issues in a fresh, personal way.

The original mosaic was built using data from NASA’s satellites and images sent by people like you. It showed that while we may be separated by geography, culture, or language, we’re all connected by our shared home—Earth.

That one event sparked a new tradition, now known as Global Selfie Earth Day. Every April 22, people around the world join in by posting selfies from their locations, showcasing the beauty of nature and the importance of protecting it.

Today, even though NASA doesn’t officially collect and compile the images like it did in 2014, the tradition lives on—fueled by social media, environmental passion, and the universal joy of snapping selfies in the name of planet Earth.
