    Description

International Corgi Day is celebrated every year on June 4. It’s a special day meant to spotlight the adorable corgi and their unique history, personality, and role in our lives. Whether you’re the proud owner of a Pembroke or Cardigan Welsh Corgi, or simply an admirer of their social media stardom, this day is all about embracing everything corgi.

    History

Corgis have roots that stretch back to 1107 AD. They arrived in Wales with Flemish weavers who brought their small, sturdy herding dogs along for the ride. These dogs were soon used to herd cattle in the Welsh countryside.

Their short height was perfect for dodging kicks while nipping at heels. Their intelligence and agility made them ideal farm workers, and their cuteness certainly didn’t hurt either.

Over time, two distinct breeds emerged: the Pembroke Welsh Corgi and the Cardigan Welsh Corgi. While they look quite similar, Pembrokes have docked tails and a more fox-like appearance, while Cardigans are slightly larger with long, bushy tails.

In 1927, the corgi made its grand debut at Crufts, one of the world’s most prestigious dog shows. This was a turning point that elevated the breed’s status and brought it to the attention of royal eyes — quite literally. Queen Elizabeth II would later become a lifelong fan, further cementing the corgi’s star status.

Queen Elizabeth II fell in love with corgis as a young girl and received her first, named Dookie, in 1933. Over the years, she owned more than 30 corgis — many descended from her original pets.

Thanks to her affection for the breed, corgis enjoyed a royal boost in visibility. They became beloved companions not only in Britain but around the world. Soon, corgis were appearing in films, books, and even cartoons.

    How To Celebrate

    1. Show Some Love to Corgis

Today’s the day to shower your corgi with attention, cuddles, treats, and toys. Post their cutest pics online and tell the world how much you adore them.

    2. Hold a Corgi Event

Whether it’s a backyard party or a local meetup, getting a bunch of corgis together is guaranteed to bring smiles. Add costumes for extra joy.

    3. Support a Rescue Group

Many corgi-focused rescue groups rely on donations and volunteers. Use this day to give back or even consider fostering or adopting a corgi in need.

    4. Spread the Word

Help people learn more about the breed’s history, traits, and care needs. Share the story of the corgis’ arrival in Wales or their first show at Crufts.

    Amazing Facts
    1. Corgis are great herders — even kids and cats might find themselves gently “herded” around the house.

    2. They’re surprisingly fast, despite their short legs. When they zoom, they really zoom.

    3. Corgis have a great sense of smell, like all dogs, and can even be trained in scent detection.

    4. The Pembroke Welsh Corgi was removed from the UK’s list of Vulnerable Native Breeds in 2016 due to a rise in popularity.

    5. Cardigans are older than Pembrokes — even though they’re less common, they’ve been around longer.

    Why We Love

    1. That Signature Look

Short legs, big ears, round butts, and expressive eyes. If cuteness were a competition, corgis would win it paws down.

    2. Their Big Personalities

Despite their small stature, corgis are confident, bold, and full of mischief. You’ll never have a dull moment with one around.

    3. They’re Smart Cookies

Originally bred for herding, corgis are incredibly intelligent. They pick up tricks fast, love challenges, and enjoy learning new things.

    4. Affectionate and Loyal

Corgis form strong bonds with their humans. They’re the kind of dog that wants to be by your side at all times — preferably on your lap.

    Faq's
    1. Is it just for Pembrokes or Cardigans too?

Both breeds are celebrated! Whether you love Pembroke's, Cardigans, or corgi mixes, all are welcome on International Corgi Day.

    2. Why are corgis called “royal” dogs?

Queen Elizabeth II helped popularize corgis by owning more than 30 throughout her reign. That royal approval made them famous worldwide.

    3. Are corgis good for first-time dog owners?

Yes! They’re smart, trainable, and affectionate. But be prepared — they need regular exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy.

    4. Do corgis get along with other pets?

Generally, yes. Corgis are social animals and often do well with other dogs and even cats when properly introduced.
