Description
International Homeless Animals Day – August 16 is a global observance dedicated to raising awareness about animals without permanent homes. You learn about their hardships—and how you can help. You stand with shelters, rescues, and loving people working hard to help them.
History
It was first launched in 1992 by the International Society for Animal Rights (ISAR)—an animal advocacy organization based in the United States.
The idea behind this special day was simple but powerful: raise global awareness about the growing number of homeless animals.
Back then, stray overpopulation was growing rapidly in many cities, but few people were talking about it.
Animal shelters were overwhelmed, and many animals faced neglect, illness, or worse, simply because they had no homes.
So ISAR decided to take action—and gave the world a day to speak up for the voiceless.
They picked August 16 as the date and began encouraging shelters and animal lovers everywhere to host events, vigils, and adoption drives.
The movement quickly spread beyond the U.S., gaining support from rescue groups, veterinarians, pet lovers, and even local governments.
