National Breastfeeding Month – August is a month-long observance dedicated to promoting breastfeeding and supporting breastfeeding mothers. It’s celebrated every year in—you guessed it—August. The whole idea is to shine a spotlight on the importance of breastfeeding and to normalize it in society. Because feeding your baby shouldn’t come with judgment or side-eyes. It should come with love, support, and maybe a snack for Mom too.
History
The roots of National Breastfeeding Month – August go back to 2011, when the United States Breastfeeding Committee (USBC) officially declared August as the month to honor and support breastfeeding efforts.
But the celebration really kicked off globally with World Breastfeeding Week, which takes place annually from August 1st to 7th. This week was launched way back in 1992 by World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) to promote, protect, and support breastfeeding around the world.
So, August became the perfect time to expand that celebration, turning seven days into a glorious thirty-one. Cheers to more awareness, more support, and more happy, healthy babies!
How To Celebrate
1. Share Your Story
Whether it was magical, messy, or a mix of both, your breastfeeding journey matters. Share it on social media to inspire others.
2. Support a Breastfeeding Mom
Offer a meal, lend a hand, or simply say, “You’re doing great.” Because every little bit of support counts.
3. Attend a Community Event
Look out for local breastfeeding events, walks, or virtual meetups. They’re great for learning and connecting.
4. Educate Yourself and Others
Learn about the challenges and triumphs of breastfeeding and share that info with dads, siblings, and even grumpy uncles.
Amazing Facts
