    Description

National Mental Health Awareness Week is an annual event that takes place from May 10 to May 16. Its primary goal is to raise awareness about mental health issues, reduce stigma, and encourage open conversations. It's a week where communities come together to support one another and promote mental well-being.

    History

Mental health awareness has come a long way. In earlier decades, people didn’t talk much about mental health—it was kept quiet, even hidden. But that’s changed, and in the best way possible. National Mental Health Awareness Week was created to start conversations, build community support, and remind everyone that mental health challenges are part of the human experience.

The idea blossomed from the growing movement to recognize mental well-being as a crucial part of a happy, balanced life. In some places, similar events are celebrated under different names, like Canadian Mental Health Week, Global Mental Health Week, or even World Mental Health Day.

    How To Celebrate

Even if you’ve never participated before, it’s super easy to get involved in National Mental Health Awareness Week – May 10–16. You can celebrate solo, with a friend, with your workplace, or even online.

    1. Start with a Conversation

You don’t need to be a therapist to check in on someone’s feelings. Just ask, “How are you really doing?” Then listen.

    2. Do a Self-Care Check

Ask yourself: What does my mind need today? Maybe it’s sleep, maybe it’s quiet, maybe it’s laughter. Give yourself that gift.

    3. Create a Calm Space

Light a candle, put on soft music, or tidy up your space. A cozy environment does wonders for your headspace.

    4. Journal Your Thoughts

Grab a notebook and jot down how you’re feeling. Writing things out can bring clarity and calm your racing thoughts.

    5. Plan a Themed Event with Friends

Host a game night, paint together, or just chat over coffee. Themed events start small and grow with love and laughter.

    Faq's
    1. What is a Mental Health Planning Kit?

It’s a collection of ideas, resources, or personal items to help you manage stress and support your mental well-being.

    2. Is this the same as World Mental Health Day?

Not exactly. World Mental Health Day is on October 10, while National Mental Health Awareness Week – May 10–16 is a full week focused on awareness and support.

    3. Do I need to have a mental illness to participate?

Not at all! Mental health is something everyone has, and caring for it is important for all of us.

    4. What's the difference between this and Canadian Mental Health Week?

They happen around the same time and have similar goals, but Canadian Mental Health Week is a separate national event in Canada, supported by the Canadian Mental Health Association.
