    Description

Every year on May 6, we come together to celebrate National Nurses Day—a day dedicated to honoring the compassionate, skilled, and tireless professionals who play a pivotal role in our healthcare system. Whether you're a patient, a colleague, or a community member, this day offers a special opportunity to express gratitude to the nurses who make a difference in our lives.

    History

The roots of National Nurses Day actually go back to 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland, an official at the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, proposed a National Nurses Day to President Eisenhower. Although her efforts didn’t result in an official proclamation at the time, she sparked a movement.

Fast forward to 1974, when New Jersey Governor Brendan Byrne made a bold move. He declared May 6 as "Nurses Day" in his state, thanks to the advocacy of Edward Scanlan from Red Bank, NJ. This local action helped plant the seed for a nationwide event. That same year, the International Council of Nurses declared May 12 (Florence Nightingale’s birthday) as International Nurses Day, giving the movement a global push.

The big breakthrough came in 1982, when the American Nurses Association (ANA) and other nursing organizations urged for national recognition. Their efforts paid off when President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation officially designating May 6 as National Recognition Day for Nurses, which would later become National Nurses Day.

In 1993, the ANA took things even further by declaring National Nurses Week, running annually from May 6 to May 12, to honor and celebrate all that nurses do every day.

    How To Celebrate

    1. Express Your Gratitude

A simple thank-you note or a heartfelt message can go a long way in making a nurse feel valued. Share your appreciation through cards, emails, or social media posts.

    2. Organize a Celebration

Hospitals and healthcare facilities often host events such as luncheons, award ceremonies, or themed parties to celebrate nurses. These gatherings provide an opportunity for colleagues and patients to come together and acknowledge the contributions of nursing staff.

    3. Offer Discounts and Freebies

Many businesses show their support by offering special deals to nurses on National Nurses Day. From free coffee to discounted meals, these gestures are a small token of appreciation for their hard work.

    4. Donate to Nursing Charities

Consider making a donation to organizations that support the nursing profession. Your contribution can help fund scholarships, provide resources for professional development, or support nurses in underserved communities.

    Amazing Facts

The concept of nursing has been around since ancient Roman times, when caregivers worked in religious institutions and early hospitals. So yes—nursing might just be the original superhero gig.

Globally, nurses make up nearly 90% of the healthcare workforce in many communities. That’s right—without nurses, many healthcare systems would completely collapse.
