    Description

Every year, on the last Saturday of April, communities across the United States come together to celebrate National Rebuilding Day. In 2025, this meaningful day falls on April 26. It's a day dedicated to revitalizing neighborhoods, repairing homes, and fostering a sense of unity among neighbors. Whether you're a seasoned volunteer or someone looking to make a difference for the first time, National Rebuilding Day offers a chance to contribute to a cause that truly matters.

    History

Back in 1973, a small group of kind-hearted folks in Midland, Texas, saw that many of their neighbors were living in homes that were falling apart. Some couldn’t afford repairs, and others didn’t have the ability to fix things themselves. So, what did this group do? They rolled up their sleeves, grabbed some tools, and got to work — all in the spirit of giving. They called it “Christmas in April.” (Yes, way before Christmas in July became a thing!)

This little local idea caught on like wildfire. People across the country thought, “Hey, we can do that too!” So by 1988, the movement had grown so much that it needed its own national organization. That’s when Rebuilding Together was officially born — with headquarters set up in Washington, D.C., and affiliates popping up all over the U.S.

To focus all this amazing community work, the last Saturday of April was chosen to be National Rebuilding Day. This date became the heart of a month-long effort called National Rebuilding Month, and it’s now a time when thousands of volunteers come together to repair homes, revitalize neighborhoods, and remind everyone that we’re all in this together.

This modern-day movement is about more than just hammers and nails. It’s about housing justice, safe living conditions, and the belief that no one should have to live in unsafe or unhealthy homes. And it’s all built on the foundation of love, kindness, and the power of community.

    How To Celebrate

    1. Volunteer Your Time
