National Technology Day – May 11

That’s exactly why May 11 is celebrated as National Technology Day in India—an official recognition of the country’s remarkable achievements in science and innovation.

The story begins in 1998, when India shook the world (quite literally) by conducting three successful nuclear tests on May 11 at the Pokhran Test Range in Rajasthan. This mission, famously known as Operation Shakti, marked a bold step in India’s journey as a technological and nuclear power.

But India wasn’t done yet.

Just two days later, on May 13, two more nuclear tests were conducted, placing India firmly in the elite group of nuclear power nations. These tests were led by none other than Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who later became one of India’s most beloved Presidents and a symbol of scientific excellence.

Here’s the twist: India’s achievements on that day weren’t limited to nuclear power alone.

On May 11 itself, India also successfully test-fired the Trishul missile, a short-range surface-to-air missile, and celebrated the first flight of Hansa-3, a light, indigenous aircraft built for pilot training and surveillance.

These combined efforts showcased the strength, creativity, and ambition of India’s scientific and defense communities.

Recognizing the significance of these accomplishments, then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared May 11 a day of great national pride. And so, National Technology Day was officially observed for the first time in 1999.

Since then, every year on this day, the Technology Development Board (TDB) under the Department of Science and Technology honors scientists, engineers, and innovators whose work continues to power India’s growth across sectors—from defense and space to healthcare and digital technology.
