History
The journey to World Information Society Day began with the establishment of the ITU on May 17, 1865, as the International Telegraph Union. This pioneering organization laid the groundwork for international cooperation in telecommunications.
In 1969, World Telecommunication Day was introduced to commemorate the founding of the ITU. This observance highlighted the importance of telecommunication in fostering global communication and understanding.
Fast forward to 2005, during the World Summit on the Information Society, the United Nations General Assembly declared May 17 as World Information Society Day. This decision aimed to focus attention on the critical role of ICTs in achieving development goals and bridging the digital divide.
In 2006, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference decided to merge the two observances, creating World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. This unified celebration underscores the interconnectedness of telecommunication and the information society in today's digital era.
