History
The story of the Portuguese language begins long before any official celebration. Its earliest form evolved from Latin, brought to the Iberian Peninsula by Roman settlers over 2,000 years ago. From there, it mixed with local dialects and evolved during the Middle Ages into Galician-Portuguese, a language spoken across what is now northern Portugal and parts of Spain.
By the 12th century, with the foundation of the Kingdom of Portugal, the language began developing its own identity. By the 16th century, during the Age of Exploration, Portuguese had spread far beyond Europe, reaching Africa, Asia, and South America. Thanks to explorers, traders, and colonists, the language found homes on distant shores and took on new flavors in every place it landed.
This period marked what many scholars call The Birth of Modern Portuguese – a standardized version of the language used in literature, governance, and education. From this point on, Portuguese was no longer just a local dialect; it was a global language.
Fast forward to 1996, when the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) was formed. This group includes nations where Portuguese is an official language, such as Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Portugal, and others. The CPLP aimed to strengthen cultural and political ties among these countries, recognizing Portuguese as a powerful bond that unites very different nations.
Then came a turning point: in 2009, the CPLP established May 5 as the Day of the Portuguese Language and Culture, celebrating shared linguistic and cultural heritage across continents.
A decade later, the importance of Portuguese on the global stage was formally recognized by the world. On November 25, 2019, UNESCO officially proclaimed May 5 as World Portuguese Language Day.
