Every year, on Denim Day – April 30, people from all walks of life put on their favorite denim clothes to stand up against sexual violence. You’re not just dressing for comfort or style—you’re dressing for justice, awareness, and change.
History
In 1992, an 18-year-old girl in Italy had what started as a normal day—she was picked up by her driving instructor for a lesson. But things took a horrific turn when he pulled over and assaulted her. He raped her, then dropped her off at home with a chilling threat not to tell anyone.
But she did tell someone—her parents. And thanks to her courage, her rapist was arrested and eventually convicted. Justice seemed to be served—until it wasn’t.
A year later, the man appealed the decision. His defense? The young woman’s jeans were so tight that they couldn’t have been removed without her assistance, and therefore, he claimed the act must have been consensual. Shockingly, the Italian Supreme Court agreed and overturned his conviction.
The world was stunned. People were outraged. And in response, Italian women members of Parliament showed up to work wearing denim. It was a bold statement: clothing is never consent.
This powerful protest spread quickly across the world. In the United States, women in the California Senate and Assembly also wore jeans to show solidarity. Among them was Patricia Giggans, a feminist and activist who was deeply moved by this show of strength. At the time, she was the Executive Director of the Los Angeles Commission on Assaults Against Women, which is now known as Peace Over Violence.
Inspired by what she saw, Patricia Giggans declared the last Wednesday in April to be Denim Day—a day dedicated to standing with survivors and fighting back against victim-blaming culture.
