    Description

As May rolls around, it's time to celebrate the joy and companionship our pets bring into our lives. National Pet Week, observed from May 4 to May 10, is a special occasion dedicated to honoring our beloved animals and recognizing the profound bond we share with them.

    History

Before you dive into the belly rubs, purrs, and hamster wheel marathons, let’s take a peek at how National Pet Week – May 4–10 came to be.

It all started in 1981, when the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and its auxiliary branch decided it was high time pets got the recognition they deserved. We’re talking about the unsung heroes who fetch the stick, sit in your lap like royalty, or chill behind glass blowing fishy bubbles.

The idea was simple: honor the bond between people and pets, encourage better care for animals, and raise awareness about how to be a more responsible pet parent. It was less about creating a "Hallmark holiday" and more about creating a heartfelt movement that made people stop and say, “Wow, my dog really is the best boy.”

Since then, National Pet Week has grown into a nationwide celebration of fur babies, feathered friends, scaly sidekicks, and everything in between. Veterinarians, schools, shelters, and pet lovers join together each year from May 4 to May 10 to shower our animal companions with the appreciation they deserve.

    How To Celebrate

     1. Declare a “Pet of the Week”

Every pet deserves their 15 minutes of fame. Post their photo, tell their story, and show off what makes them unique. Your 12-week-old kitten with ninja skills? Your sleepy lizard who naps like a champion? Highlight them!

    2. Treat Them to a Spa Day

Time for some pampering! Give your pet a gentle bath, brush their fur, trim their nails, and freshen their bed or tank.

    3. Plan an Adventure

Take your dog to a new park. Set up a kitty playground. Create an obstacle course for your rabbit or ferret. Even a new branch for your reptile can feel like a grand escape!

    4. Take Glorious Pet Photos

Your phone is full of blurry nose shots and tail flicks. This week, do a full pet photo shoot. Add props. Make it dramatic. Pets become film stars, and you're their director.
